Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions about our mortgage courses
How many hours of pre-licensing education do I need to become a Mortgage Loan Originator in South Carolina?
South Carolina requires the NMLS-approved 20-hour National SAFE Comprehensive course plus 3 hours of South Carolina-specific content, for a total of 23 hours, before you can sit for the SAFE MLO test and apply for your license through the NMLS.
Is this course approved for South Carolina's NMLS licensing requirement?
Yes. Our 23-hour SAFE course is NMLS-approved and satisfies both the National SAFE Comprehensive requirement and South Carolina's 3-hour state-specific requirement administered by the SC Board of Financial Institutions (BFI).
What's the difference between the Bronze, Silver, and Gold packages?
The Bronze package covers the required 23-hour course only. Silver adds exam prep to help you get ready for the SAFE MLO test. Gold includes everything in Silver plus your first 8-hour CE renewal course, so you're already covered for your next license renewal.
How is the course delivered?
The course is online and instructor-led, so you can complete it on your own schedule while still getting access to a live instructor for questions.
What happens after I finish the course?
Once you complete the 23 hours, you'll need to pass the NMLS SAFE MLO test and submit your license application (with any required background check and credit report) through the NMLS system to become a licensed Mortgage Loan Originator in South Carolina.
Do I need to renew my license once I'm licensed?
Yes — South Carolina MLOs must complete 8 hours of NMLS-approved continuing education annually to renew their license, which includes a 7-hour SAFE Core course and a 1-hour South Carolina law review.
